What Is Heavyweight Cotton? GSM Explained

You'll see "heavyweight" on almost every streetwear label — but what does it actually mean, and is it worth paying attention to? The answer comes down to one number: GSM.

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much one square metre of fabric weighs. The higher the number, the denser and thicker the fabric. It's the most honest way to compare two garments that look similar in photos.

Typical GSM ranges

  • T-shirts: around 140–160 GSM is lightweight, 180–220 GSM is midweight, and 220 GSM and above is considered heavyweight.
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts: around 250–300 GSM is a standard everyday weight, while 350 GSM and above feels substantial and premium.
  • Sweatpants: heavyweight fleece joggers often sit in the 350–450 GSM range — some ZELX sweatpants use 430 GSM fleece.

Why heavyweight fabric looks better

  • Structure: thicker fabric holds its shape, so boxy and oversized cuts look intentional rather than floppy.
  • Drape: heavyweight cotton falls straight down instead of clinging to the body.
  • Durability: denser knits resist twisting, thinning and pilling, so the piece keeps looking new for longer.
  • Opacity: no see-through white tees.
  • Feel: a heavier garment simply feels more premium in your hands and on your body.

Is heavier always better?

Not always. Very heavy fabric can feel warm in summer and needs more time to break in. For hot days, a midweight tee or a breathable waffle or mesh knit can be the better choice. For autumn and winter layering, heavyweight fleece is hard to beat — explore our Autumn collection for seasonal pieces.

Cotton blends vs 100% cotton

100% cotton feels soft, breathable and natural. Cotton–polyester blends keep their shape better, shrink less and dry faster — which is why many heavyweight fleece hoodies and sweatpants use a blend. Neither is "better"; it depends on how you wear and wash your clothes. Every ZELX product page lists the exact fabric composition and weight.

How to keep heavyweight pieces looking new

  1. Wash inside out on a cold, gentle cycle.
  2. Avoid bleach and strong detergents.
  3. Tumble dry low or hang to dry to prevent shrinking.
  4. Store hoodies folded rather than on hangers so the shoulders keep their shape.
