How to Wash Graphic Tees and Hoodies Without Cracking or Fading

Prints crack and fade because of heat and friction, not age. Here is how to wash, dry and store graphic tees and hoodies so the design stays sharp for years.

A great graphic tee or hoodie usually dies the same way: the print starts to crack, the colours go dull, and the edges lift. None of that is caused by age. It is caused by heat and friction — mostly in the washing machine and the dryer. Change a few habits and a printed piece can look almost new after years of wear.

Short answer: turn the garment inside out, wash cold (30°C / 86°F or lower) on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, skip fabric softener and bleach, hang dry or tumble dry on low, and never iron directly on the print.

Why prints crack, peel and fade

Most modern prints — DTF, screen print and DTG — are a layer of ink bonded to the fabric. Heat softens that layer and makes it brittle when it cools again. Friction against other clothes, zips and the drum scuffs the surface. Strong detergents and bleach attack the pigment. Do all three every week and the print breaks down long before the garment does. If you are curious how the print methods compare, read DTF vs screen printing vs DTG.

How to wash a graphic tee or hoodie, step by step

  1. Wait before the first wash. If the piece is brand new, give it 24 hours after delivery — and wear it once or twice before washing if you can.
  2. Turn it inside out. This is the single biggest win. The print rubs against the inside of the garment instead of jeans, zips and the drum.
  3. Close zips and empty pockets. Metal zips and buttons are what scratch prints most. Zip up any zip hoodies before they go in.
  4. Wash cold. 30°C (86°F) or lower. Cold water is enough for everyday dirt and keeps both the ink and the cotton from shrinking.
  5. Choose a gentle cycle and a half-full drum. Less spinning, less rubbing. Washing similar colours together also stops dye transfer onto light prints.
  6. Use mild liquid detergent. Powder can leave grit that scrubs the print. Skip bleach entirely, and skip fabric softener — it can leave a film that makes ink peel at the edges.

How to dry printed clothes

Hang drying is best: lay hoodies and heavy sweatshirts flat or over a rail so the shoulders do not stretch, and keep them out of direct sun, which fades both print and fabric. If you need the dryer, keep the garment inside out and use the lowest heat setting, then take it out while it is still slightly damp. High heat is the fastest way to crack a print.

Ironing, steaming and storage

  • Never iron the print. Iron inside out on low, or put a cotton cloth or baking paper between the iron and the design.
  • Steam from the inside. A handheld steamer on the reverse side removes creases without touching the ink.
  • Fold, don't hang heavy pieces. Heavyweight hoodies stretch on hangers. Fold them with the print facing in so it does not stick to other clothes.
  • Skip dry cleaning. The solvents can damage printed ink.

How to fix a print that is already cracking

Small hairline cracks on a print cannot be fully reversed, but you can stop them spreading: switch to cold washes, inside out, and air drying from now on. For a print that lifts at one edge, place baking paper over it and press briefly with a warm (not hot) iron to re-bond it. If a ZELX print peels or cracks within the first weeks of normal wear, contact us — that counts as a defect, and we will replace or refund it.

Quick care checklist

  • Inside out, zips closed
  • 30°C / 86°F or cold, gentle cycle
  • Mild liquid detergent, no bleach, no softener
  • Hang dry or low heat
  • No iron on the print

The same routine keeps the garment itself in shape too — see our full guide to washing a hoodie. Ready for a new piece? Browse all graphic hoodies, sweatshirts and tees, or pair a printed top with pants in our matching sets.

FAQ

Can you put graphic tees in the dryer?

You can, but only inside out on the lowest heat setting. High heat is the main reason prints crack. Hang drying is always safer.

What temperature should I wash printed clothes at?

Cold or 30°C (86°F). Warm and hot water soften the ink and speed up fading and cracking.

Why is the print on my shirt cracking?

Usually because of repeated high heat (hot washes, hot dryer, ironing) combined with friction from washing it right side out. Switch to cold, inside-out washing and air drying to stop it spreading.

Should I wash a new graphic tee before wearing it?

It is not necessary. If you want to, wait at least 24 hours after it arrives and follow the cold, inside-out routine above.

Does fabric softener damage prints?

It can. Softener leaves a coating that weakens the bond between ink and fabric, so prints may start to peel at the edges. Skip it for printed pieces.
